Transport properties of heavy particles in high Reynolds number turbulence
The statistical properties of heavy particle trajectories in high Reynolds numbers turbulent flow are analyzed. Dimensional analysis assuming Kolmogorov scaling is compared with the result of numerical simulation using a synthetic turbulence advecting field. The relevance of the results obtained in the derivation of Lagrangian transport models is discussed. PACS numbers: 47.27.Qb 47.55.Kf 02.50.Ey

This article is a contribution to understanding of teacher actions that can contribute to a successful mathematics learning experience, defined as one that engages all students, especially those who may sometimes feel alienated from mathematics and schooling, in productive and successful mathematical thinking and learning. We offer an example of a task that can form the basis of such a learning...
متن کاملBoundary conditions and event scaling of granular stick-slip events
We describe experiments on stick-slip failure of a granular material within a linear shear cell. The experiments are performed in a quasi-two-dimensional photoelastic granular material which is sheared via a slider block and spring moving at a constant velocity. The apparatus can provide either constant-volume or constant dP/dV boundary conditions on the aggregate, and we observe boundary-condi...
متن کاملOscillatory Convection in Rotating Spherical Shells: Low Prandtl Number and Non-Slip Boundary Conditions
A five-degree model, which reproduces faithfully the sequence of bifurcations and the type of solutions found through numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq thermal convection equations in rotating spherical shells with fixed azimuthal symmetry, is derived. A low Prandtl number fluid of σ = 0.1 subject to radial gravity, filling a shell of radius ratio η = 0.35, differentiall...
متن کاملStochastic low Reynolds number swimmers.
As technological advances allow us to fabricate smaller autonomous self-propelled devices, it is clear that at some point directed propulsion could not come from pre-specified deterministic periodic deformation of the swimmer's body and we need to develop strategies for extracting a net directed motion from a series of random transitions in the conformation space of the swimmer. We present a th...
